What is leadership in maritime anyway? Although many books are written not much reference is made to the maritime industry. According to Peter Drucker, a leader is ‘someone who has followers’, the new terminology though is ‘empowering people’. How you do you become a true leader? In this introductory course you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of leadership in maritime, distinguish between Leaders and Followers, learn what followership is, what a Follower wants, how leadership observed by Followers, how to influence others, to influence through leadership, what is body language and what it says, which are the different leadership styles, the management versus leadership, under the spectrum of leadership within Shipping.
By the end of this presentation you will be able to:
  • Understand the term leadership.
  • Know the types of leadership.
  • The communication strategies of a leader.
  • Understand and introduce some new approaches a leader employs to handle people and situations.
  • See leadership in a marine context.
  • Decide what leadership style suites you best.
  • Understand the difference between managing and leading.
The course consists of one session.
