Course Description

Shipping being an international business with parties being based in different countries, can be complicated. Getting down to business, the ship is chartered, the cargo is delivered to the final destination. Everybody is happy! What about freight collection?  Is freight collection a pretty straight forward function?

The Crash Course in Freight Collection provides core knowledge and skill for the Freight Collection function and workings of the Freight Collection Department. The course focuses on the shipping chain part and procedures involved, the different charter party types and the different freight collection tactics and strategies, as well as the shipping terms and information provided by each charter party type (time charter, bareboat charter, pool agreement, voyage charter).  Practical examples are used and calculations.

The participant will acquire a spherical view for Freight Collection responsibilities, as a unit and in cooperation with other departments, knowledge of main fixing terms and ability to calculate hire, off hire, freight, laytime.

The course is delivered in English.

Learning Outcomes

The participant will be able to:
  • understand fixing terms of each charter type, related to Freight Collection function;
  • learn the role of parties involved and each party’s responsibilities;
  • calculate hires, off hires, freight and laytime;
  • evaluate claims and act as appropriate;
  • examine counter claims and counter calculations; and
  • resolve and close outstanding accounts.

  • Session 3: Freight collection for Bareboat Charter and Pool Agreement
  • Session 4: Freight collection for Voyage Charter
