The Role of Progressive Policies, Digitalization, and Online Education in Advancing Gender Equality in the Maritime Industry
About the Research
The maritime industry is entering a new era—one defined by sustainability, innovation, and the need for greater gender inclusion. Our latest research explores how progressive policies, digitalization, and online education are transforming opportunities for women in shipping, both at sea and ashore.
We examine how modern workplace policies, new technologies, and flexible digital learning environments empower women to balance demanding professional roles with personal responsibilities, while also supporting long-term career growth.
The study highlights how these three drivers work together to create a more resilient, equitable, and future-ready maritime workforce.
This work contributes to an international dialogue on gender equality in maritime and was presented at the WTO Chairs Programme Academic Research Conference on Trade and Gender Equality (2025).

INITIATING the 1st GLOBAL RESEARCH
FOR WOMEN IN SHIPPING
in collaboration with WISTA International
In 2010, 2015, and 2017, Dr. Katerina Konsta conducted research on women in shipping, in collaboration with WISTA and for the benefit of WISTA members. The findings were presented at the WISTA International Annual General Meetings in 2015 (Istanbul) and 2017 (Rotterdam).
We are proud to collaborate with WISTA on initiatives that support and promote women in the maritime industry.
Founded in 1974, the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA International) is a global organization that connects female executives and decision-makers across the maritime sector. With a network of over 3,000 professionals, WISTA International serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and empowerment.
WISTA is represented in 62 countries through National WISTA Associations (NWAs), each aligned with and supported by WISTA International. NWAs provide localized networking, skill-building opportunities, industry visibility, and facilitate strong professional connections.
On a global level, WISTA members benefit from access to a diverse and influential network of maritime and trading professionals, creating opportunities for referrals, mentorship, strategic partnerships, and business development.
