One of our core objectives is to research and analyse the shipping world. Seaworks is actively involved in research into sustainability in shipping, human resource management, HR in shipping, shipbuilding and scrapping trends in the world, and women in shipping.

Our aim is to undertake research that will benefit both society and the shipping industry. In this sense, we strive to promote research and international science and technology co-operation.

Reasearch on women in shipping

In 2010, research on women was carried out by the research team at the WISTA Athens Conference for the first time. Further research was presented in 2015 at the WISTA International Conference in Istanbul.

In 2016, at the WISTA International Conference in Miami and on board the MS Koningsdam, Dr.Katerina Konsta, the Managing Director of Seaworks Training & Consultancy and a WISTA Hellas member, presented the findings of the first international research on women working in the global shipping industry, in collaboration with WISTA Hellas and WISTA International.

The extent of women’s involvement in maritime trade has been identified as important over the years, as well as the apparent discrepancies in gender-based treatment. There is a still huge gap in data relating to women in shipping. Katerina Konsta and her SeaWorks team are trying to identify the status of women in shipping today and further establish what must be done in future.

The shipping industry is traditionally considered to be an exclusively male domain, on shore and, especially, on board ‘Due to the fact that “the people make the place”, and that workplace culture, climate and practices are determined by people within the organisation, how are women in shipping coping in such a world?‘ This research attempts to identify women’s workplace status in shipping.

The study investigates the status of women and problems which they face in shipping all over the world. For example, if they have more favourable recruitment, workplace integration and career progression than men.

The findings were presented at the WISTA 2017 International Conference in Rotterdam.
