Planting a Tree
A Symbolic and Practical Gesture
Why we ask our Advance Certificate in Maritime Business (MAREVA) participants to plant a tree?
Asking to plant a tree serves several purposes.
The Advance Certificate in Maritime Business (MAREVA) aims to provide essential shipping knowledge necessary for initiating a career in the maritime industry. It targets underprivileged and disadvantaged women, and on these grounds it’s open to any woman worldwide, regardless of background, age, or life stage.
As you can see in the photos, our Katerina Konstanta (2024 class) planted her tree with her family and friends at Chios island, the land of Captain and Shipowners. This is so inspiring!
Asking to plant a tree is a symbolic and practical gesture that promotes personal growth, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and celebration of achievements. It encourages graduates to embrace their role as global citizens and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Symbolism of Growth and Renewal
Planting a tree symbolizes growth, renewal, and the potential for future development. Just as a tree grows and flourishes over time, so too do individuals. This symbolism is especially poignant for graduates, who are at the beginning of their journey into the wider world. The act of planting a tree represents their growth, both personal and academic, and their ongoing potential to achieve and contribute to society.
Environmental Awareness and Sustainability
In today’s world, environmental awareness and sustainability are more critical than ever. Planting a tree directly contributes to the health of our planet by improving air quality, providing habitats for wildlife, and combating climate change. This act serves as a practical step towards environmental stewardship, highlighting the importance of taking responsibility for our natural world. Encouraging tree planting fosters a mindset of sustainability and environmental consciousness among participants.
Community Engagement and Social Responsibility
Tree planting is an excellent way to engage with the community and foster a sense of social responsibility. It brings people together for a common cause, strengthening community bonds and encouraging collective action. This shared experience promotes teamwork and cooperation, essential skills for any thriving community. Additionally, it instills a sense of duty to contribute positively to the local and global community, reinforcing the importance of social responsibility.
Sense of Ownership and Connection
When individuals plant a tree, they develop a personal connection to the environment and a sense of ownership over their contribution. This connection can inspire ongoing environmental advocacy and care. The tree serves as a living reminder of their efforts and achievements, fostering a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. This sense of ownership can also extend to other areas of life, encouraging a proactive and responsible attitude in various endeavors.
Celebration and Commemoration
Planting a tree is a meaningful way to celebrate significant milestones and achievements. For graduates, it marks the culmination of years of hard work and the beginning of a new chapter. The tree serves as a living commemoration of their success and a lasting legacy for future generations to appreciate. This celebration through tree planting is a powerful way to honor accomplishments and create a lasting impact that symbolizes growth, hope, and the promise of a brighter future
