The course is about crew management.
Crew management for ships incorporates a variety of activities handled by inhouse crew managers and crew management companies.
This includes the sourcing, recruitment, selection, deployment, scheduling, training/upgrading programs, and on-going management of seafarers engaged on vessels under crew management contracts, special circumstances management (like COVID) and administrative aspects.
While operating in a very volatile shipping industry, irrelevant of the handling size each company / operator is dealing with, at the same time is very important to understand the core elements that compose, modify and classify a balanced crew management.
Crew management is the combination of balanced time management and seafarers’ availability, good knowledge of all updated crew related conventions, soft skills and happiness achievement, in an era where the most skillful should be retained and the new comers should be upgraded. All the above mentioned issues, along with restrains of finance (i.e. budget), will be discussed accordingly.
- To acquire fundamental knowledge of the crew related conventions and their characteristics;
- To synthesize a recruitment policy fully streamlined with the vessel’s safe manning requirements;
- To evaluate the risk exposed on a crew change in line with the overall financial planning;
- To develop seafarers employment and recruitment techniques; and
- To formulate proactive mechanisms in order to retain, train, evaluate and upgrade skilled seafarers.

Artemios Alifragkis

Mr. Artemios Alifragkis has obtained the MA in Shipping Business (with scholarship) and the BSc Hons in Shipping, Transport & Logistics with Operations & Management from London Metropolitan University. He has also obtained the OEEK accredited Certificate in Computerized Accounting.
Artemios has more than 20 years of working experience in the crewing and human resources department. He is working in the Human Resources Deptartment, as a HR Supervisor, in one of the biggest and well-known Greek Shipping Bulk Carriers Company, owning and managing dry bulk carrier vessels. His daily tasks mainly include the stages of screening, selection, programming and preparation of seafarers in accordance with the National Conventions and Flag Regulations (IMO, MLC & Flag State), as well as general financial units (budget units’ preparation), interview with candidates, and educational parameters.
He has attended several conferences as well as professional development seminars, expanding his cognitive and professional field.
Artemios has also participated as a speaker and panelist in many shipping and business executive forums. Since 2008, he is lecturing at shipping undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
