The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of managing employees / teams across national cultures. Cross-Cultural Management examines the management of culturally diverse organisations or teams. Drawing from research on the impact of national and sub-cultures on organisations, it explores the effects of cultural diversity on major organisational management processes. The course provides important professional expertise for contemporary human resource and international business management.

The course explores theories of cultural differences and academic research on the effects of cultural diversity on communication, negotiation, motivation, leadership, and ethics in organisations. Through comparing theories and the application of theories to cases, we extend our awareness of the cultural differences that may impact businesses.

By the end of this crash course, the participant will be able to:
  • Understand the important of cross-cultural management in today’s globalised world.
  • Comprehend a range of conceptions of culture.
  • Learn about most relevant management frameworks of culture.
  • Understand the impact of cultural differences on leadership styles.
  • Develop an awareness of own cultural beliefs, assumptions, and practices.

By the end of Session 1: Introduction to Cross-Cultural Management,  you will be able to:
  • Understand what Cross-Cultural Management is;
  • Appraisal for why it is important for today’s management of maritime and ship suppliers;
  • Learn about the impact of globalisation on cultural diversity;
  • Understand the importance of cultural awareness in ship supply;
  • Learn about the mistakes made by renowned global companies;
  • Learn the Hofstede’s Onion Model; and the Iceberg Model on cultural dimension framework;
  • Understand the importance of comparison between cultures.
By the end of Session 2: Cultural Frameworks,  you will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of cultural frameworks
  • Learn about Geert Hofstede’s framework
  • Know about Uncertainty Avoidance, Power Distance, Masculinity and Individualism
  • Understand why limitations exists;
  • Understand main criticism of the framework (Hofstede); and
  • Learn about the 8 Illusions of Cultural Distance.
By the end of Session 3:  The GLOBE Study & Leadership,  you will be able to:
  • Understand what the GLOBE study is;
  • Learn about the 7 dimensions of the framework; and
  • Understand the importance of leadership styles and culture;
  • Understand the 9 dimensions of culture by the GLOBE study;
  • Identify the differences in similarities between GLOBE and Hofstede;
  • Understand leadership styles according to GLOBE; and
  • Understand the importance of culture in leadership styles and perceptions of good leaders.
Session 4: Reflection & Case Study Exercise By the end of Session 4: The GLOBE Study & Leadership, you will be able to:
  • Understand the shifts of cultural values and their continuing importance;
  • Understand the context and background of the case study;
  • Answer the case study questions;
  • Understand the underlying cultural assumptions of the situation and persons involved; and
  • Provide recommendations on what could have been done different.
