To be safe at sea you need to be able to communicate effectively in English. In these days of multinational and multilingual crews, the importance of sharing a common language is emphasized by the 2010-amended STCW Convention, which requires that at all times on board ships there shall be effective written and oral communication and that all officers in charge of a watch (navigational or engineering) must have a good command of spoken and written English.

The language competence requirements of the 2010-amended STCW for deck officers include using English

  • to communicate an understanding of legislation, rules and regulations governing safe working practices at sea
  • to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of teamwork, leadership, communication, decision-making and resource management
  • to explain MARPOL regulations, describe pollution avoidance procedures
  • to communicate an understanding of international regulations, standards, codes and recommendations on the carriage of dangerous cargoes

The Seafarers English e-learning course is designed based on these 2010-amended STCW requirements and the IMO Maritime English Model course (3.17) and aims to enhance the communicative competence of seafarers.

The aim of the course is to provide with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable seafarers to
  • Use English publications relevant to their duties
  • Enhance their language competence towards achieving effective oral and written communication
  • Use English to demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in a maritime setting
  • Use Maritime English as a communicative vehicle for ensuring efficient organization, management and business operations in the maritime industry
  Upon completion the participant will be able to:
  • have the appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding to read and understand legislative texts, codes of practice, permits to work
  • use specialized English terms in the appropriate maritime context

    This programme is open to all deck officers who wish an on-line refresher course and/or need practice on task-specific English vocabulary related to the skills required by the STCW. There are no requirements for particular knowledge, or seafaring experience, as a prerequisite to this course. The course is open to non-seafarers who are interested in acquiring industry-specific vocabulary for career advancement or career shifts. This course should be of interest to:
    • Officers and port captains;
    • crew managers who should ensure that their ships officers possess basic working knowledge of the language in relevant legislative texts;
    • managers involved in crewing or human resources who wish to assess whether language competency of seafarers is in accordance to new requirements;
    • ESP language teachers interested in teaching in the field of Maritime English.
