To be safe at sea you need to be able to communicate effectively in English. In these days of multinational and multilingual crews, the importance of sharing a common language is emphasized by the 2010-amended STCW Convention, which requires that at all times on board ships there shall be effective written and oral communication and that all officers in charge of a watch (navigational or engineering) must have a good command of spoken and written English.
The language competence requirements of the 2010-amended STCW for deck officers include using English
- to communicate an understanding of legislation, rules and regulations governing safe working practices at sea
- to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of teamwork, leadership, communication, decision-making and resource management
- to explain MARPOL regulations, describe pollution avoidance procedures
- to communicate an understanding of international regulations, standards, codes and recommendations on the carriage of dangerous cargoes
The Seafarers English e-learning course is designed based on these 2010-amended STCW requirements and the IMO Maritime English Model course (3.17) and aims to enhance the communicative competence of seafarers.

Dr. Paraskevi Papaleonida
Dr Paraskevi Papaleonida has been teaching Maritime English since 1995. She was trained in the IMO World Maritime University, where she attended a professional development course and gained expertise in assisting seafarers achieve communicative competence in Maritime English, as per STCW.
Paraskevi specializes in Maritime English teaching material development. She is the author of five Maritime English course books, based on IMO requirements, which are taught in state Merchant Marine Academies.
Paraskevi was awarded with distinction her PhD in English Studies from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She also holds an MA in Women’s Studies from the University of York, UK. She worked as an adjunct lecturer at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and as an English for Specific Purposes Teacher in vocational training institutes. She works as an Oral Examiner in English Language Competence Examinations. She is also involved in editing technical English textbooks in marine engineering.
